Alot of high school sweethearts meet their partners online in a variety of ways. One of the way is online dating. Internet dating sites can connect you with people in your area, reducing the odds of a long-distance relationship. Instead of ending their romance, couples often find themselves engaged in a long-distance relationship; commuting over distance, keeping in contact to keep their relationship alive until they are able to reunite. After graduation from high school, couples often find themselves being separated by the opportunities provided to them by an out-of-town or out-of-state college. 

A different type of LDR results from the relocation because of a job offer to one of the partners. When it comes to work there are two types of long distance relationships that can result from it.

Military

Even if the couple is married, it is not always practical or possible for the spouse to join the military partner; especially if the assignment is in a foreign country. Oftentimes, the nonmilitary partner is unable to follow on the base reassignment to the new location. Many people serving in the military find themselves falling in love with their partner and then being reassigned to a different base.

Meeting your partner through work has been fairly commonplace in the past, with a company that has offices around the world it is now very likely that coworkers from different backgrounds can meet, fall in love, and maintain their relationship over distance. In today’s business world many companies have offices in multiple states and even on several continents. The ones that are ignited when two people meet because of work although they come from different states or countries and those that are turning to LDRs because of work relocation of one of the two partners.

With the help of the internet, long distance relationships have exploded in popularity as they become easier to sustain with the use of modern technology. But we’ve come a long way from the time the only communication between long distance lovers was telephone or corresponding via mail.  Before the popularity of internet dating, long-distance relationships were not as common but were certainly in existence and were a successful way of keeping a relationship flourishing over distance.
